Join members of the Hilliard City Schools Board of Education for conversation before the Tuesday, May 1 PTO meeting. Members of the board will be available to meet parents and discuss items that are important to you for about 30 minutes prior to the meeting. The board will listen to parent input and share some recent district highlights. Please join us at 6:30pm on May 1 in the Media Center.

The regular monthly PTO meeting will follow at 7pm.

Testing schedule

OAA testing begins for students in grades 3,4 and 5. The testing schedule is as follows: Wednesday, April 25 – Reading; Tuesday, May 1 – Math; and, Thursday, May 3 - Science (grade 5 only).

Tips For Students

o Arrive to School On time

o Rested (Good bedtimes, please!)

o Fed (Enjoy breakfast at home or at school – just please make sure they eat! Food in the tummy makes the brain work better!)

o Possessing a good attitude (Confidence is a great boost!)

o Relaxed (It is but one day in the life of a school year.)

o Remembering (The students know great test taking strategies and should use them!)

Additionally, Thursday brings our last Late Start, meaning that everything is 2 hours later (bus pick up, etc). Remember, there will be no morning kindergarten. And, cheese pizza is the only lunch option. No breakfast is served on Thursday.

Do you want Mrs. Leach to principal from the roof? Do you want the chance to throw a pie at your teacher?

If so, get those pledge sheets turned in by Tuesday, February 14. If you have collected any pledge money, please turn that in with your pledge sheet. We will return the pledge sheets on Thursday, February 16 so you can collect any remaining money.

Remember, if our school earns over $5,000 in total donations, Mrs. Leach will be principal from the roof! If your classroom raises over $400, a student in the class will be randomly chosen to throw a pie in your teacher’s face!

Don’t forget about the other prizes!! The top $$$ Fundraiser will win an iPod Touch! The top 3 $$$ Fundraisers in each grade will win a Beacon Cinch Sack. We also have Raffle tickets for the Sock Hop (March 9 @ Beacon) and drawings for Target Gift Cards.

User Fees

Any unpaid User fees should be paid by March 2, 2012. Students with unpaid User fees will have their progress reports held until the fees are paid.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten pre-registration for the 2012-13 school year

The Hilliard City School district will hold its annual Kindergarten pre-registration for the 2012-2013 school year on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. If your child will be five years of age on or before September 30, 2012, he/she is eligible to start kindergarten during the 2011-2012 school year. Parents should go to their “home” elementary school for the attendance area in which they live on January 19th at 7:00 p.m. They will receive a Kindergarten information packet and make an appointment to register their child on a selected date in February. When all documentation has been collected, parents will then make an appointment for a screening on a selected date in March or April. Registration and screening will take place at the Hilliard City Schools’ Central Office Annex located at 5323 Cemetery Rd., Hilliard.

Birthday Celebrations at Beacon Elementary School!

We know that birthdays are important to every child and that kids like to celebrate with their classmates. However, sending in a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude those children who have food allergies, diabetes or other dietary restrictions. In addition, sugary snacks do not contribute to achieving our goal of healthy bodies and healthy eating habits for all students.

If you would like an alternative to food treats for your child’s birthday recognition at school, here are some suggestions.

Party favors – erasers, tops, notepads, bubbles
Come to the classroom and read a book to the students!
Purchase something for the classroom – book, game, plant, etc.
Decorate a box and send it to the classroom. Classmates can write a greeting to your child and place it in the special box!
Arrange for students to play a game in place of snack eating.
Bring in something the students can sign – like a t-shirt, tote bag, autograph book

Check with the teacher to see what would be acceptable. As always, advance notice of your plans is appreciated.

Attention Volunteers!

Hilliard City Schools requires volunteers to renew their identification badges every five years. Volunteers who obtained a badge prior to December 31, 2006 will need an updated background check along with a new badge no later than June 2011.

The Human Resources Department will perform all background checks at the district’s Central Office, 5323 Cemetery Road. The cost for the IntelliCorp background check is $9. If you have not lived in Ohio for at least five years, an $18 nationwide background check is required. The cost of the new badge is included. If you have been fingerprinted within the last 12 months and have a copy of the results, you may submit those and simply request a new $2 volunteer badge. Badges may be replaced at any time for a $2 charge. Hilliard City Schools accepts cash, check or credit/debit card (Visa or Master Card only).

Volunteer walk-in hours for replacement badges are available Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. During winter, spring and summer breaks, volunteers must schedule an appointment. You may also schedule an appointment outside of the normal walk-in hours by contacting the Human Resources Department at (614) 921-7124. Thank you for volunteering for Hilliard City Schools!
